Taken on as a project to provide ourselves with fresh poultry and eggs as well as an activity and real-world business and finance lesson for our children Julian, Laurence, Carys and Kurt (hence the name of our enterprise), J&L ChicKens strives to produce the best tasting eggs and broilers you’ll find locally.
We grow our chickens on pasture, fresh air, good food, and sunshine, so they are healthier than factory raised chicken. Our hens are allowed to free range on several acres and the broilers are raised as pastured poultry. We don’t use pesticides, steroids, antibiotics or other enhancers that are needed to keep factory raised chickens alive. The result is great tasting chicken. We are calling our chickens All Natural; we are not classified as Organic as this is a Federal standard that doesn’t always live up to its name.
Because each batch of pasture raised chicken starts approximately every four weeks, we will have them available every four weeks starting mid June, 2007 or thereabouts. It takes about 8 weeks for each cycle. Our last batch will be finished mid November and we will not start new until early spring 2008.
*UPDATE* We will be selling our first 20 chickens at the Winchester Farm Market on Tuesday, June 26, and Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30, if any are left at that time. First come, first served! See the EVENTS page for more details!
Eggs will be produced starting in mid-July 2007, and they will be continuously produced throughout the fall, winter and on into 2008.
In addition to the above products, we will be offering 'Easter' eggs and gourmet chocolate/russet colored eggs from Ameracaunas, rare French Marans and Welsummer hens starting in October; they are of great interest to children and can add that special 'je ne sais quoi' to fine dining. They can be boiled, eaten or presented for fine dining extravaganzas.

Our order forms can be found
here
as well and we will also take orders over the phone, so leave a message. We recommend that you only buy if you are local to us as this will preserve the freshness of the chicken. We do not ship out of state, but you are welcome to come pick up your chicken at our farm once they are processed or see us at the Farm Markets listed in our
events page.
